Alexandria Nicole

December 12, 2017

I’ve been tasting at Alexandria Nicole for more than a decade and I have found remarkable consistency with their wines. As a limited production, boutique winery, they have two tasting rooms, one in Woodinville, one in Prosser and recently they have opened a tasting room at their Destiny Ridge Vineyard location. They’re probably best known for their fantastic Viognier that is one of the best in the state and also their outstanding ‘Jet Black’ Syrah. They have over 23 varietals planted at their Destiny Ridge Vineyard in Horse Heaven Hills — everything from Albarino to Carmenere. Tasting at Alexandria is a relaxed, insightful experience as their tasting room staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Regardless of vintage, they always possess an impressive lineup of red and white wines.

One of the outstanding Viognier bottlings that I have sampled in the past year out of Washington, the 2016 Alexandria Nicole ‘Crawford Vineyard’ Viognier (WWB, 91) is incredibly layered and shows very pretty aromatics that entice. Even better was their sexy and rich 2015 Alexandria Nicole ‘Jet Black’ Syrah (WWB, 92) which combines power and finesse. Learn more about these great wines at http://www.alexandrianicolecellars.com/ Here are the lovely new releases by Alexandria Nicole.

Drink 2017-2022- 91

2016 Alexandria Nicole ‘Crawford Vineyard’ Viognier- This wine was sourced from 82% estate fruit with the remainder was from the Crawford Vineyard. This wine starts with aromas of white peach, nutmeg and a touch of golden delicious apple with orange blossom. This is very pretty aromatically. The wine leads to flavors reminiscent of white peach, Pazzaz apple, orange blossom and lychee. This has a wonderful texture and viscosity. Drink 2017-2022- 91

2015 Alexandria Nicole ‘Shepherd’s Mark’ White Wine- Sourced from the Destiny Ridge Vineyard, this wine is a blend of Viognier and Roussanne and Marsanne. This has a lovely astringency as the wine was aged in stainless steel and reveals white peach, gooseberry and lychee flavors that connect with a touch of green apple. Lithe and delicious, this is an outstanding summer wine. Drink 2017-2022- 90

2014 Alexandria Nicole ‘Gravity’ Merlot- This wine was aged fro 22 months in 30% anew French oak prior to bottling. The stunning new release wines by Bodegas LAN

The stunning new release wines by Bodegas LAN

Bodegas LAN

December 11, 2017

We bring you jaunt over to Spain to start our week. One of the hallowed estates in La Rioja, Bodegas LAN was founded in 1972. LAN is an acronym based on the initials of each of the three provinces that form the D.O.Ca. Rioja: Logroño (currently part of La Rioja), Alava and Navarra. Their oak program is particularly interesting as French, American, Russian and hybrid barrels (American staves and French oak heads built in the same barrel) are utilized in the blending. Bodegas LAN’s estate Viña Lanciano Vineyard parallels the Ebro river and is set on 72 hectares. Having visited the property a few years back it is hard to describe the beauty of the land. Grapes for their premium bottlings, the Viña Lanciano, the LAN A Mano and the Culmen. The vineyard has 24 plots, and is planted to Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Graciano and Garnacha vines, aged on average up to 60 years. During harvest grapes are hand-harvested and once in the winery, bunches and grains are individually selected by hand prior to fermentation.

A stunning value is their 2011 Bodegas LAN ‘Reserva’ (WWB, 93) which is dense, layered and completely irresistible right now. Even better was their 2014 Bodegas LAN ‘A Mano’ Rioja (WWB, 94) which has power and poise that few Rioja wines can achieve. Learn more about Bodegas LAN at http://www.bodegaslan.com Here are the great new release wines by Bodegas LAN.

2011 Bodega LAN ‘Reserva’ Rioja- This wine needs roughly an hour in the decanter to show its stuff. Once aroused, this outstanding wine begins with aromas of ripe oak, red cherry preserves, blood orange rind and suggestions of black plum. The palate is dense and lush, displaying orange rind, black cherry cough syrup, cigar box and Hoisin sauce flavors. Silky smooth and balanced, the long black fruit driven finish lingers. This is a stunning wine by Bodega LAN that delivers some incredible value. Drink 2017-2027- 93

2011 Bodega LAN ‘Vina Lanciano’ Rioja Reserva- Another strong showing in this vintage is the Vina Lanciano Reserva, which is composed of Tempranillo with Manzuelo and Graciano, and only made only made in great vintages. The wine begins with aromatics of red cherry, baking spices, red raspberry and teaberry with hints of milk chocolate. There are ripe flavors of red cherry, cedar, black pepper and sage. Showing its feminine side, this is medium bodied and lithe, as this Reserva is hard to resist right now. Drink 2017-2025- 90

2014 Bodega LAN ‘LAN A MANO’ Rioja- This stunning new wine is a compelling blend of 80% Tempranillo, 12% Graciano and 8% Manzuelo that was hand-harvested from the Vina Lanciano estate. The wine was first aged for seven months in French oak and further aged for another six months in Russian oak. The wine needs more than an hour decant to strut its stuff. Inky and bold, the wine begins with beautiful aromatics of black fruits, licorice and a touch of milk chocolate. The weight and power of this wine is absolutely outstanding as the silky tannins connect with dark fruit flavors and sterling minerality. Utterly compelling, try to resist this outstanding wine for at least another year. Drink 2018-2030- 94

2011 Bodega LAN 'Culmen Reserva' Rioja- The wine needs roughly two plus hours in the decanter to fully develop. Once aroused this begins with anise, cigar box and blackberry aromatics. The palate is exceedingly plush as the wine takes on a rather intoxicating rich mouthfeel that makes this Rioja nearly impossible to put down. Anise, sandalwood, wild blackberry cobbler flavors impress with a marvelous salinity that combines with a citrus driven finish that marks this delicious Rioja. Drink 2017-2030- 94

Chris Dowsett crafts some gorgeous red and white wines for Buty Winery

Chris Dowsett crafts some gorgeous red and white wines for Buty Winery

Interview with Chris Dowsett, Head Winemaker of Buty Winery

December 8, 2017

An outstanding winemaker for one of the great Walla Walla wineries, Chris Dowsett has a longstanding history in the wine industry. With previous stints at famed Robert Mondavi, and Domaine Chandon, Chris eventually migrated north to become winemaker for Buty since 2009. Having made his first wine in 1983 from his family's vineyard in the Willamette Valley, Chris has amassed more than 30 harvests. His vast experience shows in every bottle of Buty wines. I recently had the chance to review some of his outstanding new releases and was highly impressed with the combination of richness and terroir with each wine. He is a very talented guy. Here is my interview with Chris Dowsett, head winemaker of Buty Winery.

WWB: Can you talk about your journey in wine before coming to Buty? Who were some of your initial inspirations?

CD: I grew up in Oregon, and started in the wine industry through my family. We lived in an area of Portland that was slowly being overtaken by the suburban sprawl. My parents wanted to move farther out (west) and found a piece of property with an old house and 12 acres of vineyards. We had no experience in the industry, but worked to double the size of the vineyard and start a winery with some partners. The winery originally focused on whites and sparkling. We worked with Pinot Noir, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Semillon and a variety of tiny lots of more obscure varietals. I was very inspired by some of the white wines of Champagne, Alsace, California’s Anderson Valley and Oregon.

During the time I attended Oregon State University, I took an exchange to Roseworthy College in South Australia, to study wine science. This trip really opened my eyes to Rhône and Bordeaux style wines. Much of what I took for standard in Oregon was different there. The Barossa and Clare valleys of South Australia were areas I loved. I also loved the contrast of big wineries like Penfolds, with the newest technology and research, and smaller wineries, like Wendouree Cellars, that did not use any modern methods, but made amazing wines. I came back thinking that I needed to see more of the wine world.

I spent five years in Napa and Sonoma working a few early harvests at Robert Mondavi Winery and Domaine Chandon, in both the vineyards and the laboratory. I decided to move into the cellar for permanent jobs at Schramsberg and finally J. Stonestreet Winery. In 1996, I moved my family up to Walla Walla to be assistant winemaker at Canoe Ridge Vineyard. After winemaker jobs at Latitude 46N and Artifex Wine Company (a custom crush facility), I joined Buty in 2009.

WWB: You make some of the best Bordeaux style white wine in Washington. Can you talk about your special style of Washington ‘Bordeaux Blanc’; and the challenges of making wine in warm vintages?

CD: White Bordeaux wines have long been of interest to me. I first started working with Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc in Oregon with. These were much different in that climate than Germanic or Burgundian grapes. They had more structure and grace than the more aromatic varieties. With my time overseas, I was introduced to aged Australian Semillon and fresh New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. These were great discoveries.

Once back in the U.S., I first started drinking Washington wines through the early Semillon releases from wineries like Covey Run, Snoqualamie, and Kiona. As my budget increased, I tried the Semillons from Chinook and L’Ecole #41, and the Woodward Canyon Charbonneau White Blend. I was always amazed by the way these wines would age in bottle. With the Buty white blend, we have established a style that we love. Semillon should be front and center, there is no influence of oak, and it should have a long timeline of enjoyment. We are looking to express the characters of the individual varieties, yet build a complex, complete wine of balance and harmony. The aim is to make a white wine that has richness and good acidity, not just one or the other. We have set up methods that help this plan.

The vineyards are where all this begins. Our blend is usually at least 60% Semillon. Rosebud Ranches, in the Wahluke Slope, is our warmest site. It is also our oldest vines. These vines were planted in the late 1970s and are great for withstanding the warm summers. The wines from this vineyard have the classic characters of Washington Semillon: rich honey and figs, with a slightly apricot fruit profile. Boushey Vineyard gives us a more acid-driven profile from the cooler Yakima Valley. This fruit has a bit more golden apple and pear. Lonesome Spring Ranch, in the lower lands below Red Mountain, is where we get our two other varieties. The Sauvignon Blanc is used as an acid backbone to build the more aromatic wines around. It has a hint of grassiness and tropical fruit to complex the blend a bit. The Muscadelle is the amazing floral character that can make a young, tight wine open up from the first cool pour out of the ice bucket. I am looking in the vineyards for flavor and acid balance more than sugar levels. With our warm climate, we generally are working to keep the acids firm and the fruit ripe, without going too far. We do not add acid or water to the Buty wines, so there is much time spent in the vineyards looking for the perfect time to pick.

In the cellar, we use mostly cool whole cluster pressed fruit, processed under blankets of carbon dioxide. Small amounts are fermented with more oxygen and no sulfur dioxide for complexity. We will take some small lots of Semillon and crush the clusters, and leave them on skins for 12-72 hours. This adds tannin and richness to the wine. We ferment a small selection of each lot in neutral barrels, with the majority going to a cofermentation of all three varieties in one of our two concrete cubes. We love how this piece of the blend ferments slowly and cool, due to the thick concrete walls absorbing much of the heat. We will age both the barrel lots and the concrete tank on the fermentation lees to again add body and richness. The concrete tank has a huge flat floor that gives lots of surface area to these lees, and does not need any lees stirring to get the benefits of the interaction of the yeast cells. We will leave some percentage of the wines without malolactic fermentation, to use for blending.

The final step is the blending. I taste, with Nina Buty and Paul Boen, my assistant in the cellar, every individual lot of each variety, and then begin with very rough blends of the three. We fine tune over usually about four tastings a wine that expresses the best of the vintage, yet retains the style and soul of the previous blends. We usually go to the library and open a few of our favorites, or more recent vintages similar to the one we are working on. We are looking to make a wine that does not get its richness from tools like high alcohol, high percentages of new oak or residual sugar. The final product should be a complex, exciting wine that has enough energy and body to stand up to the cuisine we love in the Northwest, no matter what season of the year.

WWB: Your 2014 Buty ‘Rediviva of The Stones’ Red Wine (WWB, 93) was a head-turning blend that had wonderful weight, poise and range. Can you talk about this special wine?

CD: The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater is an amazing winegrowing area. It is an AVA that is totally designated by being in an alluvial fan of river rocks that was once the Walla Walla River. It is pure cobblestones going down hundreds of feet, in some areas. Nina first started working wine Syrah from The Rocks in 2000, with fruit from Cayuse’s Cailloux Vineyard. In 2006, we purchased 10 acres of land in the area. Seven acres were planted for the Rediviva of the Stones. We have three clones of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre, Grenache and a bit of a few Rhône whites. The vineyard is fittingly named Rockgarden Estate.

When you grow in the Rocks District, the grapes get the heat of the warming rocks, as well as some sunlight reflection off the rocks. The resulting wines get more savory flavors than fruity characters. Syrah is what we love there. The profile is filled with spicy and gamey flavors, mixed with olives and smoke. We give some emphasis to these by slow, uninoculated fermentations, and no new oak. The Cabernet in the blend is actually lighter than the Syrah. It gives some floral characters and a bit of cherry to help keep the Syrah from becoming too much of a heavyweight. A touch of Mourvèdre brings a hint of pepper and a bit more to the midpalate. The tannins from growing on The Rocks are always long and silky. It is a big wine that drinks rich, not astringent or bitter. This wine is our expression of what we love in The Rocks.

WWB: When you’re not enjoying Washington wine, what are some of your favorite wines of the world?

CD: I have always enjoyed sparkling wines. Blanc de Noir Champagne usually is the direction I lean. The white wines of Alsace, especially Gewurztraminer, are my favorites. I also love blends out of the south of France: Grenache based Châteauneufs and Gigondas, Mourvèdre based Bandols. Red wines and Riesling from the Clare Valley of Australia are great wines when I find them. Pinot Noir can be a great complement/contrast to some of the big reds we do so well here in Washington.

Sourcing form some of the great vineyards in Sonoma, David Ramey has gained a worldwide reputation for his outstanding red and white wines. He is one of the outstanding producers of Chardonnay. Northstar Winery

December 6, 2017

I can remember sampling one of my first bottles of Northstar Merlot. Taken from the absolutely awesome 2003 vintage, this wine was silky smooth, layered and polished. The wine needed quite some time in the decanter to settle. As I poured the wine I got that lovely chocolate and dark fruit notes. It was a dense treat, a truly memorable bottle that I enjoyed with my closest friends from graduate school. Located in Walla Walla, Northstar is one of the only Washington wineries that focuses its program on crafting high quality Merlot. The Merlot wines are hugely dense, tannic and need time in the bottle to fulfill their potential. Northstar releases their wines on the later side because of the dense flavors and tannins that these wines provide.

For many years Northstar has relied on the talents of head winemaker David Merfeld. David  crafts some powerful wines, even in challenging vintages like 2010 and 2011. The new releases were all outstanding, none less so than their 2013 Northstar ‘Columbia Valley’ Merlot (WWB, 92) which showed wonderful complexity and weight from this warm vintage. Learn more about these awesome wines at Here are the great new releases by Northstar.

Highly structured, this warm vintage wine shows off black olive, black cherry syrup and boysenberry jam flavors. Decadent and delicious, with lovely fruit weight, this great showing will cellar well for a decade or more. Drink 2017-2027- 92

2013 Northstar ‘Columbia Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon- The 2013 Northstar ‘Columbia Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon was largely aged in French oak (50% new) prior to bottling and includes a touch of Merlot in the blending. There is a light herbaceousness with red bell pepper aromatics that connect with dark fruits and Turkish coffee. Silky smooth on the mid-palate, the wine reveals dark fruit flavors with milk chocolate shavings and sagebrush. Generous and plush, this is another outstanding release by Northstar. Drink 2017-2027- 92

2013 Northstar ‘Red Blend Walla Walla Valley’ Red Wine- This great wine is a blend of 63% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Cabernet Franc which was aged for 21 months in 50% new French oak prior to bottling. Result of A Crush

December 5, 2017

One of the best values out of Walla Walla, Result of a Crush is a project created by Amanda Reynvaan and Angela Reynvaan Garratt, sisters of consulting winemaker Matt Reynvaan. The idea behind Result of A Crush was to produce terroir driven wines that are more readily available and affordable than the Reynvaan wines. Most of these wines are in the 20-30 dollar range. While they might be perceived as ‘Baby Reynvaan’ wines, each bottling is a serious, stand alone wine. Talking to Matt Reynvaan this summer about these wines, he talked about the effort in crafting these marvelous blends.

I was very impressed with the combination of weight and terroir in their red wines. An absolutely stunning Rose wine, the 2015 Result of A Crush ‘Summer Cuvee’ Rose (WWB, 91) is one to buy by the case, regardless of season. The 2015 Result of A Crush Red Wine (WWB, 92) shows marvelous intensity and richness,  yielding some really lovely stony character. In a similar vein, their 2015 Result of A Crush ‘Christmas Cuvee’ Red Wine (WWB, 92) is the best Christmas themed wine that I have sampled. This is a marvelous effort at this price point by superstar winemaker Matt Reynvaan. Learn more about Result of A Crush at http://resultofacrush.com/or on Facebook at facebook.com/ResultofaCrush Here are the great new wines by Result of A Crush.

2015 Result of A Crush ‘Summer Cuvee’ Rose- This pale colored Rose wine begins with aromas of guava, bright strawberry and bubblegum. The weight and structure here is outstanding, particularly considering the heat spikes during this warm vintage. Red cherry, guava puree and strawberry Starburst candy flavors persist. Drink 2017-2022- 91

2016 Result of A Crush ‘White Blend’ White Wine- The 2016 Result of A Crush ‘White Blend’ is a compelling combination of Grenache Blanc, Marsanne and Viognier. Showing a deep, golden hue, the wine opens with a bouquet of lychee, roasted pineapple and Pazzaz apple. Showing really nice structure, this wine reveals flavors of banana, pineapple, lychee and Pink Lady apple, all leading to a long, cream and mineral driven finish. Drink 2017-2024- 91

2015 Result of A Crush Red Wine- A proprietary blend of Rhone varietals, based on the nose I would suggest this is rather Syrah heavy. One stony whiff takes you right to the Rocks District with umami, bacon fat, blood orange rind and horse manure aromatic that are seriously impressive. Silky smooth, this wine glides and reveals flavors of Parma ham, orange zest, cigar box and umami. The range here makes this irresistible. Drink 2017-2025- 92

2015 Result of A Crush ‘Christmas Cuvee’ Red Wine-  I don’t recall another Christmas wine made in Washington and I doubt one is made quite as well. The 2015 Result of A Crush ‘Christmas Cuvee’ begins with aromatics reminiscent of smoked brisket, cigar ash, wet stone and blueberry pie. There is a rather sterling minerality yielded from this hot vintage wine. Blackberry cobbler, wet rock, orange rind and Hoisin sauce flavors connect with the tension. This is another outstanding wine made by superstar winemaker Matt Reynvaan. While highly enjoyable in its youth, this will cellar well into the next decade. Drink 2017-2025- 92

Bodega Catena Zapata

November 30, 2017

One of the outstanding and historic houses in Argentina, Catena was first founded in the 19th century. The founder, Nicola Catena, traveled from Italy to Argentina in 1898, and was described as an eternal optimist, who firmly believed that he had found the promised land in Mendoza, where he planted his first Malbec vineyard in 1902. Malbec had previously been a blending grape in Bordeaux Nicola and he saw its potential in Mendoza.

Nicola’s grandson, Nicolas, took over the winery in the 1960s but was faced with inflation and political turmoil in Argentina, so he took a job as a visiting economics professor at UC Berkeley. He then came back to Argentina and wanted to focus on the winery, deciding to plant Chardonnay and Malbec at a 5,000 feet elevation. This was an unusual vineyard practice at the time but the risk paid off. Soon Nicolas was crafting incredible wines from these vines that became blind tasted ahead of epic wine projects like Chateau Latour and Opus One.

In 2001 Nicolas' daughter Dr. Laura Catena took over the Research & Development program at Bodega Catena Zapata. An Emergency Room physician, with degrees from Harvard and Stanford, Dr. Laura Catena brought a very strong science background to the family winery's R&D project. She immediately set about working with the high altitude Malbec that her father had planted and has achieved incredible success at the winery since taking over.

I was very impressed with the releases from Catena. Particularly their Alta Series (Malbec, Chardonnay and Cabernet) offered very serious value. Their 2014 Bodega Catena Zapata ‘Alta’ Malbec (WWB, 92), has beautiful dark and blue fruit flavors with nice tension. The show-stopper was the 2013 Bodega Catena Zapata ’Nicolas Catena’ Red Wine (WWB, 95). This was an absolutely epic bottling that will cellar marvelously for decades. Learn more about these wonderful wines at http://www.catenawines.com Here are the gorgeous new releases from Catena

This glass-staining Malbec begins with a bright bouquet of mocha, sandalwood, creosote and creme de cassis with blueberry compote. The mouthfeel is rather voluptuous. Slightly tannic, the wine evolves into displaying dark fruit flavors that connect with tar, graphite, and Turkish coffee. Round and generous, the silky texture glides through the mid-palate. This gorgeous wine will age well for the next two decades. If enjoying in its youth, be sure to give this at least a two hour decant prior to enjoying. Drink 2017-2040- 95

2013 Bodega Catena Zapata ‘Nicasia Vineyard’ Malbec- The Nicosia Vineyard is located in the Uco Valley in the La Consulta region. The vineyard has 100 acres planted to Malbec which is set on sandy soils at 3500 feet. This wine was aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak prior to bottling and then sat for 24 further months in the bottle. This inky colored wine is rather reticent at first and needs at least a two hour decant to fully evolve. Once aroused the wine reveals aromatics reminiscent of black cherry compote, mocha, creme de cassis and blueberry pie with a graphite edge. Stunningly smooth and soft on the mid-palate this wine shows off blackberry jam, espresso bean, dark chocolate shavings and blueberry pie flavors that sit alongside wonderful tension. Owen Roe

November 29, 2017

One of the great stops in the Yakima Valley, Owen Roe not only carries my namesake but makes some downright outstanding wines from some of the best vineyards in Washington including the DuBrul Vineyard, the Olsen Vineyard and the Red Willow Vineyard. If you haven’t had a chance to drop by this winery, it is a must visit, especially in the summer when the sweeping views of the valley are best enjoyed. Owen Roe was founded in 1999 and has been focused on making high quality Pinot Noir from Oregon and red and white varietals out of Washington. I recently had thew chance to try their new release red wines out of Washington and was captivated by the consistency of the wines. The releases come from warm vintages but these powerful wines not only exude depth and concentration but also display a wonderful poise and sense of place.

One of the great values in Washington wine is the 2016 Owen Roe ‘Sinister Hand’ Red Wine (WWB, 90) that delivers a ton of bright red fruits for under 20 bucks. Another outstanding value was the 2014 Owen Roe ‘Yakima Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon (WWB, 92) which is sourced from a host of great vineyards and shows wonderful depth and concentration from this warm vintage. Drink 2017-2027- 92

2015 Owen Roe ‘Rosa Mystica’ Cabernet Franc- This outstanding Cabernet Franc is sourced from several vineyard sites in the Yakima Valley. Needing an hour in the decanter to settle, the wine slowly reveals aromas of red bell pepper, red cherry, crushed mint and allspice. The silky texture coats the mid-palate. Domaine Ste. Michelle

November 28, 2017

With the holidays season upon us, we wanted to feature one of the most popular producers of Sparkling Wine in North America, Domaine Ste. Michelle. One of the most recognizable Sparkling Wine brands, you would be hard pressed to find a better Sparkling Wine value than Domaine St. Michelle. Domaine Ste. Michelle relies on the winemaking talents of Paula Eakin. She has more than 20 years of experience making wines in Washington state as part of Ste. Michelle Wine Estates and began career at Chateau Ste. Michelle’s Canoe Ridge Estate winery as a lab technician in 1994 shortly after college. In 2001, she joined Columbia Crest as an enologist and was then promoted to assistant winemaker in 2004, working with entirely white varietals. A Northwest native, Eakin was born in Spokane, Washington, and raised in northern Idaho and Kennewick, Washington. She earned a degree in food and nutrition at the University of Idaho prior to coming to Ste. Michelle.

Her new release wines were exceptional, particularly considering their price point. One of the outstanding values in Washington wine, the NV Domaine Ste. Michelle ‘Michelle Brut’ Sparkling Wine (WWB, 89) delivers wonderful mousse and a lovely range. Their high end bottling, the NV Domaine Ste. Michelle ‘Luxe’ Sparkling Wine (WWB, 92) was downright delicious, which showed range and poise up there with the best producers of Sparkling Wine in North America. Pursued By Bear

November 21, 2017

Originally from Yakima, Washington, Kyle MacLachlan is probably best known for his major role in the hit ‘90s drama, Twin Peaks which has returned to television only this year. Obsessed with Washington wine, MacLachlan relies on the talented hands of Dan Wampfler to craft his wines. I have had many vintages of these limited production wines and the latest releases are as good as any. Both releases come from the exciting 2013 vintage for reds in Washington, which at the time was the warmest vintage on record. Only limited production, MacLachlan produces a limited amount of Cabernet and Syrah each year. He is able to sourced from some of the great vineyards in Washinton, including the DuBrul Vineyard in the Yakima Valley.

These new release wines have been held back a bit and are both showing beautiful dark fruits, wonderful viscosity and tension. A downright awesome Syrah is the 2013 Pursued By Bear ‘Baby Bear’ Syrah (WWB, 93) which has gobs of dark fruits and really nice range. This will cellar beautifully for the next decade. Learn more about this awesome project out of Washington at http://www.pursuedbybearwine.com/ Here are the great new wines by actor Kyle MacLachlan and his winery, Pursued By Bear.

Sauternes 2014 Wines.jpg

2014 Sauternes Recommended Wines

November 21, 2017

I’m a sucker for good Sauternes, especially when a great vintage comes around. 2014 is already looking like one of those potentially classic vintages in Sauternes, like 2001, 2003 and 2007 where the combination of acidity, richness and botrytis creates some scintillating bottlings.

A few weeks ago I ran through some of the new release Sauternes from some of the storied houses. Many of these wines won’t break the bank, as wines from storied houses Chateau Coutet and Chateau Doisy-Vendrines will only run about $25 for a half bottle and are downright awesome values out of Sauternes. While I have yet to try the 2014 D’Yquem, the wines that shined out of this tasting were the 2014 Chateau Rieussec and the 2014 Chateau Climens. Many experts see these houses to be only a slight step behind Chateau D’Yquem and I would have to generally agree. While the 2014 Chateau Rieussec shows incredible elegance and a seamless quality, the 2014 Chateau Climens is more masculine and intense, with an unctuous character. These are stunning wines that will age gracefully for 30 more years. Here are my recommended wines from the exciting 2014 vintage in Sauternes.

2014 Chateau Doisy-Vendrines Sauternes- Highly tight knit at the moment, the wine showcases ripe aromatics of bananas foster and creme brulee with a whiff of smoke. The weight is absolutely lovely as this wine has a wonderful seamless quality. Creme brulee, apricot, vanilla cream and roasted pineapple flavors impress. This really needs a decade or more of cellaring. Drink 2025-2045- 94

2014 Chateau Climens- Deep hued, this wine is somewhat aromatically reticent out of the gate. Roasted pineapple and bananas foster with butterscotch aromas entice. The unctuous quality of the wine is apparent as the mid-palate weight is sumptuous. The wine is highly elegant while maintaining obvious intensity. The weight and intensity of the wine is apparent. Vanilla creme brulee, lemon oil, apricot jelly and ripe pineapple flavors impress, as does the near minute long finish. This is highly focused and precise. Drink 2027-2057- 97

2014 Chateau Rieussec- The 2014 Chateau Rieussec is a highly refined style of Sauternes. This golden hued wine begins with aromas of apricot jelly, vanilla creme brulee, white rose and roasted pineapple. Seamless and showing incredible weight, this has a gorgeous texture and marvelous acidity. While this doesn’t have the unctuous quality, this balance is exquisite. The salinity and terroir is simply gorgeous. Creme brûlée, salted caramel, ripe banana and vanilla cream flavors impress. Finishing exceedingly long, this outstanding effort will cellar marvelously over the next 30 plus years. Drink 2022-2052- 97

Chateau Coutet Label.jpg

2014 Chateau Coutet- Already showing a deep hue, the 2014 Chateau Coutet reveals aromas of ash, creme brulee, Meyer lemon oil, apricot and vanilla creme brulee. Ripe and intense, this showcases apricot jam, creme brulee, lemon zest and roasted pineapple. The mouthfeel and texture is stunning here. Already drinking beautifully this gorgeous wine will cellar well for the next two plus decades. Drink 2020-2040- 94

Brian Marcy, winemaker at Big Table Farm, is one of the great talents in Oregon.

Big Table Farm Chardonnay Retrospective

November 21, 2017

One of the rising stars in the Willamette Valley, Big Table Farm relies on the winemaking talents of superstar winemaker Brian Marcy. He crafts some of the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Oregon. Marcy has previously worked at Neyers in Napa prior to coming to the Willamette Valley with his talented wife, Clare Carver. Clare’s gorgeous art appears on all Big Table Farm bottles as she goes through the painstaking process of importing her paper from Italy and hand labeling all bottles.

Brian has gained a sterling reputation for his Chardonnay bottlings which are now appearing on  fine dining lists from Seattle to New York. I recently had the chance to review the past four vintages of Big Table Farm Chardonnay. Each come from relatively warm vintages in Oregon. A bit on the vintages to start. 2012 has been regarded as one of classic vintages, leading to wonderful tension in these age-worthy wines. 2013 was slightly warmer but endured the worst harvest rainstorm in memory — fortunately the fruit for the 2013 Big Table Chardonnay was picked before the storm. 2014 and 2015 were warm vintages in Oregon, which typically led to a more opulent style of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

The retrospective showed a nice range of style, as the 2012 Chardonnay (WWB, 93) was showing a more sterling minerality and had more of a Burgundian feel. The 2015 Chardonnay (WWB, 93) was hugely intense, with more of an exotic edge and a wonderful richness. The 2013 and 2014 were somewhere in between the elegance of the ’12 and the richness and intensity of the ’15. Overalll, this was a simply stunning representation of Oregon Chardonnay. Learn more about these special wines at http://bigtablefarm.com Here is my Big Table Farm Chardonnay Retrospective:

Big Table Farm Chardonnay Retrospective.jpeg

2012 Big Table Farm ‘Willamette Valley’ Chardonnay- This wine has an incredible richness and tension. The tropical fruit aromatics are pretty vivid right now. This has wonderful balance with flavors of banana, ripe pineapple, Pink Lady apple and lemon zest. The astringency gives this an old world feel and the weight suggests this will age well into the next decade. Drink 2017-2025- 93

2013 Big Table Farm ‘Willamette Valley’ Chardonnay- This wine is darker in color than the ’12 Chardonnay and shows more musty and earthy edges on the nose. Roasted hazelnut, Meyer lemon, wild mushroom and baked apple aromas come to mind. There is wonderful weight on the mid-palate, as this takes on more of an unctuous character. The tension is marvelous too as the wine reveals creme brûlée, lemon curd, ripe pineapple and macadamia nut flavors. The wine is every bit as outstanding as the ’12 bottling. The exceedingly long, cream driven finish lingers. Drink 2017-2025- 93

2014 Big Table Farm ‘Willamette Valley’ Chardonnay- The deep colored Chardonnay seems to show some nice spice accents out of the gate with nutmeg, alongside vanilla cream and roasted almonds. This is currently taking on an old-world feel, much like the ’12 Big Table Chardonnay. The tension is lovely and drives this wine, displaying minerals, white peach, Gravenstein apple and a touch of gooseberry. Lithe and light on its feet, this wine will be a long-ager. Drink 2017-2027- 93

2015 Big Table Farm ‘Willamette Valley’ Chardonnay- The wine takes on a distinctly tropical fruit bouquet with roasted pineapple, bananas foster and creme brûlée accents with a smoky edge. The sterling minerality shines through here, as the wine reveals a downright awesome combination of tension and weight. Creme brulee, Meyer lemon zest, Pazzaz apple and nutmeg flavors show nice weight. The oily texture coats the mid-palate. This finishes long with Meyer lemon cream. Drink 2017-2027- 93

MTR Productions

November 15, 2017

When a new project by Matt and Lauren Reynvaan arises, your ears quickly perk up. MTR Productions is the exciting new venture created by Matt and Lauren Reynvaan. There’s no website for this wine, or no current reviews as literally nothing has been written about this wine. I recently had the chance to sample this new release and it is seriously good.

Their new wine is 100% Syrah from the esteemed 2012 vintage and is called ‘Memory Found.’ Despite it being 100% Syrah there is a wonderful floral edge to the wine. This a very special release by one of the great talents in Washington wine, Matt Reynvaan. The texture, range, salinity and downright sexy terroir makes this wine absolutely irresistible. This wine has gobs of mouth-watering acidity and savory characteristics that make this awesome wine nearly impossible to put down. I would try to surmise where you can find more details this special project but there is literally nothing written about this wine or no offerings available online. I have been told by Lauren and Matt Reynvaan that to find this exciting new wine email info@mtr-productions.com or call (509) 240-4270. Here is my review of the 2012 MTR Productions 'Memory Found' Syrah.

2012 MTR Productions 'Memory Found' Syrah-  This is a new Syrah project crafted by superstar winemaker Matt Reynvaan. Weighing in at a mere 13.1% alcohol, this outstanding wine needs about an hour in the decanter to fully express itself. Once aroused, the wine slowly reveals aromatics reminiscent of Meyer lemon blossom, umami, bacon fat, pipe tobacco, black olive tapenade and black cherry cough syrup. Before you even try the wine the jaw-dropping aromas make you salivate. Despite it being 100% Syrah there is a beautiful citrus edge to this wine. Silky smooth on the palate, this wine showcases Chinese black tea, cigar box, blood orange zest and black truffle crudo flavors that connect with some strong minerality. The salinity and structure of the wine are outstanding. Sexy, and showing gorgeous range, this outstanding effort is best enjoyed over the next decade. Drink 2017-2027- 95

Buty

November 14, 2017

One of the great stops in Walla Walla, Buty was first founded in 2000. Buty has an exceedingly impressive lineup of wines that are unique to the Walla Walla Valley. Located in the airport district, just outside the town of Walla Walla, a visit to their Walla Walla airport area tasting room is a must stop for those new to Walla Walla wine country. A year ago I had the opportunity to interview Buty owner Nina Buty who is a fellow Whitman College grad that is not only highly knowledgable in wine but is a downright awesome person to chat wine with. Nina relies on the winemaking talents of Chris Dowsett who first started making wine in 1983. Chris previously worked for eminent Napa producers, Robert Mondavi Winery, and Domaine Chandon prior to coming to Walla Walla. He produces some very exciting, mineral driven wines that beautifully reflect the terroir.

One of his great wines in the lineup is their downright awesome red blend from the rocks area, the 2014 Buty ‘Redviva of the Stones’ Red Wine (WWB, 93) which shows downright awesome range and gorgeous Walla Walla rocks terroir The white wines from Buty were gorgeous, both coming from the exciting 2016 vintage. This gorgeous wine will pair well with a huge range of food, particularly Northwest seafood dishes. Sleight of Hand

November 10, 2017

With Trey Busch at the helm, Sleight of Hand has thrived into one of the outstanding Washington wineries. There are few wineries in the state that produce such a consistently excellent range of wines. I recently caught up with Trey at his SoDo tasting room, located adjacent to Rotie Cellars and we ran through the outstanding new lineup of Washington wines. Trey founded Sleight of Hand in 2007 along with two other partners, Jerry and Sandy Solomon. The winery focuses on both estate and non-estate fruit and has slowly been increasing production since the winery’s inception. Trey (a fellow Pearl Jam fan) is a downright awesome, down to earth guy that has attained great success in a relatively short amount of time. Their production winemaker, Keith Johnson, is highly talented.

Look for the 2015 Sleight of Hand ‘The Magician’ (WWB, 91) which shows wonderful tension despite the obvious heat of the vintage. Quintessa

November 9, 2017

Located in the northeastern corner of Rutherford, Quintessa is one of the most scenic and geographically unique properties of the Napa Valley. Founded by Agustin and Valeria Huneeus in 1990, they have moved from sustainable farming in 1990 to organic farming in 1995 and now biodynamic farming since 2000. The winery was grafted into one of the property's many hills, which utilizes gravity flow. Their flagship wine, the Quintessa Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from their 280 acre vineyard. Agustin Huneeus is one of the preeminent Napa winemakers, previously working at Concha y Toro and Concannon before starting Quintessa. The new 2014 Quintessa Cabernet Sauvignon (WWB, 95) is a stunning wine that shows true Napa character and incredible richness and tension. This is a downright awesome wine that is meant to cellar for at least a decade. Huneeus also wanted to craft a white wine for Quintessa, and he planted a small plot of Sauvignon Blanc at Quintessa estate. The resultant wine, the 2015 Illumination White Wine (WWB, 93) is a stunning rich Sauvignon Blanc wine that has remarkable texture and depth. This wine is consistently up there with the best Sauvignon Blanc made in Napa Valley. Learn more about Quintessa at https://www.quintessa.com Here are the new wines by Quintessa.

Quintessa 2014 bottle.jpg

2014 Quintessa Cabernet Sauvignon- The 2014 Quintessa is a profound wine that needs an hour in the decanter to settle. Once aroused the wine opens with a whiff of fresh oak followed by baked dark fruits mingling with chocolate and wild mushroom tones. The palate is exceedingly plush and dense as the lovely rich mouthfeel entices the senses. The body of the wine showcases tar, coffee grounds and coconut. This is an opulent, defined wine that shows refined tannins and a long, dark fruit driven finish. If enjoying young, be sure to give this a long decant. Drink 2017-2032- 95 (J.H.)

2015 Illumination White Wine- The 2015 Illumination Sauvignon Blanc is another fascinating effort from the talented winemaking team at Quintessa. This wonderful blend of 48% Sauvignon Blanc, 39% Sauvignon Musqué and 13% Semillon was aged in a combination of concrete eggs, largely used oak and stainless steel prior to bottling. This gorgeous wine opens with a bright bouquet of starfruit, cantaloupe, nutmeg and brioche nuances. The texture and weight of this wine is rather profound as flavors of honeydew melon, sliced apple, bosc pear and baking spices seamlessly persist through the long, complex finish. Delicious now, yet also shows the potential to take on some short-term cellaring. Drink 2017-2025- 93
